Dembélé Fires France to Group Victory with Hat-Trick in Dominant Win Over Norway

Ousmane Dembélé produced one of the standout performances of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scoring a sensational hat-trick as France defeated a heavily rotated Norway side 4-1 to finish top of Group I with a perfect record.

Norway surprised many before kickoff by making 10 changes to their starting lineup after already securing qualification for the knockout stage. The decision nearly proved disastrous within the opening minute.

Just 22 seconds into the contest, Kylian Mbappé burst down the right flank and rattled the underside of the crossbar with a powerful strike, coming within inches of scoring what would have been the third-fastest goal in World Cup history.

A lightning-fast counterattack ended with Dembélé curling a superb effort into the far corner to double the advantage and put Didier Deschamps' side firmly in control.

The match remained entertaining from start to finish. Straight from the restart, Norway pulled a goal back through Thelo Aasgaard, who created space on the edge of the area before drilling a precise shot into the bottom corner just seconds after France's second goal.

Any hopes of a Norwegian comeback were quickly extinguished before halftime.

Dembélé completed his hat-trick with another moment of individual brilliance, cutting onto his favored left foot before bending an unstoppable strike into the far corner to restore France's two-goal cushion and cap an outstanding first-half display.

Norway had an opportunity to reduce the deficit early in the second half after Theo Hernandez brought down Oscar Bobb inside the penalty area.

Strand Larsen stepped up from the spot, but goalkeeper Mike Maignan produced an excellent save, becoming the first goalkeeper to stop a penalty at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Bobb continued to trouble the French defense and later found himself through on goal following another clever pass from Aasgaard. However, his low effort lacked power and was comfortably gathered by Maignan.

With qualification already secured, Norway's decision to rest several key players reflected their focus on the Round of 32, where they will face Ivory Coast.

France added one final goal deep into stoppage time when Désiré Doué rose highest to head home and complete an emphatic 4-1 victory.

The result ensured Les Bleus finished first in Group I after winning all three group-stage matches, marking the first time France have achieved a perfect group record at a World Cup since their triumphant 1998 campaign.

Carrying maximum points and plenty of attacking momentum into the knockout rounds, France will head into the Round of 32 as one of the tournament's strongest contenders.
